National Online 24/7 Telemedicine Service Launch

Te Whatu Ora is launching the new online 24/7 GP service announced by the Minister of Health earlier this year. This service is designed to provide safe, subsidised access to digital care for people who can’t get a timely appointment with their regular GP/Primary Care Team, aren’t enrolled with a practice, or need care after hours.

The service is part of a wider set of primary care investments to improve access, ease pressure on general practice and urgent care, and support continuity for enrolled patients. This service is designed to complement, not replace, the trusted care of a patient’s primary care team. Consult notes will be shared with a patient’s usual GP/Primary Care Team, where they have one.

Telemedicine providers are required to follow up directly with the patient on lab test results or imaging they order. Te Whatu Ora want this service to support you to focus on your enrolled patients- to keep your books open, reduce waiting times, and maintain continuity of care.

This service sits alongside additional investment in general practice through enhanced capitation funding, urgent and after-hours care investment, and initiatives to grow the workforce, including the international GP pathway and support for nurse practitioners.

Te Whatu Ora are committed to reviewing this service in 6 months to ensure it is fit for purpose.

Please see the attached document for full information or visit info.health.nz/onlinegp for more information on the service.
