Enabling childhood vaccinations through community pharmacies The proposal which would allow pharmacists to administer childhood immunisation has drawn mixed opinions. We are aware there are several concerns and opinions from doctors and nurses, particularly regarding losing continuity of care, 6-week check-ups etc.
We all consider that the best place for a baby to be immunised is in general practice, however access barriers still exist for whānau (particularly in rural areas). In order to improve vaccination coverage, particularly for vulnerable children/tamariki, Auckland PHO have advocated for better outreach services and immunisation funding along with the pharmacy immunisation option.
A document produced to Te Whatu Ora of Frequently Asked Questions is attached for further information.
